An employment success: an update on Kelly
Posted by Guest on October 1, 2009
Earlier this year I found myself hunting for my next career opportunity—the next place I’d invest my time, heart and mind (See: Can you meet Kelly’s employment needs? ).
The problem was that the economy was arguably at its worst. Every day the news reported on more and more people joining my ranks: the laid off and unemployed.
I wanted to work for a cause I believe in – a values-based initiative that would make me happy to wake up on a Monday. I wanted to be a part of a “flat” team, where empowerment cut across hierarchy and the goals, not the politics, compelled people to work. I wanted to learn and lead so I was looking for a mentor that would teach me new skills but also give me a chance to use them.
Some people told me to take whatever job I could get. But that didn’t sit right with me.
Not only did I have a long list of wants, I also needed a flexible job that would support my scholastic pursuits—pursuing a Masters in Professional Communication this fall.
And did I find a job to fit what I want? You bet. It took almost six months but I wouldn’t trade those uncertain days for the security and fulfillment I have now.
As Communications Manager at the YMCA of Greater Vancouver, I’m getting the chance to learn, grow, contribute and go to school. I’m part of a team that works hard together and breaks new ground every day. I get to use my skills and knowledge on work that matters to me and my community. Plus they support my education and are freeing me up to fulfill that personal goal.
So if you are unemployed and have high standards, don’t let go. Make a list of what you want and then go after it.
